Rovers and Burnley will see VAR used in their FA Cup third round matches.

The Football Association has announced nine ties that will use VAR (video assisted referee) in next month’s third round matches.

And Burnley’s home game with Barnsley, and Rovers’ trip to Newcastle United, are among those to have been chosen.

The technology was used in the 2018 World Cup and will be introduced in the Premier League from the 2019/20 season.

VAR can be used to review four categories of match-changing incidents: awarding goals, penalty or no penalty, direct red cards (not second yellow cards) and cases of mistaken identity. Under the regulations, for a decision made on the pitch to be overturned, it must be a “clear error”.

Both games were moved for overseas television coverage, with Burnley’s game at Turf Moor against League One side Barnsley brought forward to 12.30pm, while Rovers’ game at Premier League Newcastle was moved back to 5.30pm.
