Rovers midfielder Elliott Bennett has sustained a slight fracture of his third metatarsal.

Bennett had struggled with a foot problem in September, playing through the pain barrier when coming off the bench in the 0-0 draw at Derby County in September.

The 29-year-old could now face around two to three weeks on the sidelines, though boss Tony Mowbray admits Bennett, who was desperate to play against Sheffield Wednesday, could play with an injection.

Bennett had missed the defeat to Wigan through suspension, after collecting his fifth booking of the season at Preston North End.

On his absence against the Owls, Mowbray said: “Benno has a slight fracture in his metatarsal.

“He was desperate to play, but we have to be careful and manage that.

“We will see how it goes.

“It’s not his fifth metatarsal which is usually the one that gives people problems.

“It’s an inside metatarsal so we will see how the pain is and how many weeks he will need, or if we can put an injection in there and he can play, as Lenihan has.

“We got to the point where we can’t keep giving him injections so he can play, we have given him a break.”

Jack Rodwell was unavailable after being on the receiving end of a strong challenge in the defeat at Wigan.

Full back Amari’i Bell also wasn’t included in the 18 against Wednesday because of a tight hamstring.

Mowbray revealed the 24-year-old was set to start at the weekend, before being withdrawn from the XI because of a hamstring problem.

The boss added: “Amari’i Bell had a tight hamstring. He was in the team to play.

“But we have Derrick Williams who bounced back from not his best performance in midweek and did a good job for us.”
