Manager Tony Mowbray has signed a new three-and-a-half year contract at Blackburn Rovers.

Mowbray’s new deal will now see him under contract at Ewood Park until the summer of 2022.

The 55-year-old replaced Owen Coyle as Rovers boss in February 2017 and is now the second longest serving manager under owners Venky’s.

His previous deal, signed following talks with the Rao family last summer, was due to run until 2019, although there was a one year option in the club’s favour which they would have triggered.

But, keen to tie him down for an extended period, chief executive Steve Waggott outlined the club’s intention to discuss new terms in an interview with the Lancashire Telegraph last month.

Mowbray was brought in as Coyle’s replacement for the final 15 games of Rovers’ 2016/17 Championship season where, despite an upturn in formn and 22 points, they were relegated to League One.

Despite a slow start last season, when Rovers lost four of their opening 11 matches, Mowbray masterminded two long unbeaten runs which ultimately saw Rovers lose just twice more en-route to finishing second to Wigan Athletic with 96 points.

Rovers are 13th in the Championship table after 19 games ahead of tomorrow’s home match with Sheffield Wednesday.

That will be his 93rd match in charge of the club, with his record currently standing at 45 wins, 29 draws and 18 defeats.

Earlier this season he passed 600 matches as a manager, taking in spells with Ipswich, Hibernian, West Brom, Celtic, Middlesbrough and Coventry.
