Injuries could force Tony Mowbray to name an 11th different back four in just Rovers’ 20th league fixture this afternoon.

The boss admits that lack of consistency hasn’t been ideal, particularly in the last two matches in which Rovers have conceded seven times.

Darragh Lenihan (hip) remains a doubt, while his replacement on Wednesday, Jack Rodwell, is also struggling to be fit.

That could see Paul Downing drafted in to partner Charlie Mulgrew, with question marks over who will start at left back after struggles for both Derrick Williams and Amari’i Bell in the Preston and Wigan defeats.

Injuries and unavailability across the defensive line have hit Rovers hard so far, with Mowbray attributing some of his side’s recent defensive vulnerabilities to that.

The boss also pointed to uncharacteristic individual mistakes in all seven goals shipped within the last seven days, losing 4-1 at Preston and 3-1 at Wigan.

“I would have to say that Nyambe has had time out injured, so has Mulgrew, Lenihan is currently out, Rodwell has missed game, Bell hasn’t played every game, Williams has missed games,” Mowbray said ahead of the Sheffield Wednesday visit.

“In an ideal world you have a back four that you stick with and work with day in day out, you keep clean sheets and you win football matches.

“That hasn’t been the case.

“Charlie hadn’t trained for a fortnight after the bang on his ribs and I think footballers need that intensity of training, trust their bodies that they can get the job done.

“We have fallen short in the last couple of games, particularly defensively.

“You can’t mask and hide away from them, when you break them down there are a lot of individual mistakes there that you would never expect to see.

“I don’t want to talk about which players, but all of them, if you want to throw them all in, you can isolate each of those seven goals to certain individuals.

“You’re thinking ‘I’ve seen them for nearly two years and not seen him do that very often’.

“They were some really poor goals that we lost.

“We aired a few things, the players had a lot of communication within that, it wasn’t just me ranting and raving.

“Hopefully we will reap the rewards of that this weekend.”
