CHARLIE Taylor is looking for a repeat of a defensive performance that earned a point and clean sheet last time out, as Burnley look to mark their Turf Moor return with a win.

It is a month since the Clarets last played at home, as trips to West Ham and the King Power Stadium preceded the two-week international break.

Indeed, Burnley have only played on home soil twice since a resounding 4-0 win over Bournemouth on September 22.

It is some consolation that, like last year, Sean Dyche’s side have picked up more points on the road.

But Taylor is hoping that can change tonight against a Newcastle United side who are two places ahead of them in 14th on goal difference, after back-to-back wins for the Magpies put them on nine points with the Clarets.

“They used to say it should be easier at home, when you’ve got your fans behind you and your home comforts,” Taylor said.

“It’s surprising, but it’s good that we are picking up points on the road.

“But at the same time, we want to make Turf Moor a fortress and be tough to beat at home. That’s something we can definitely do.

“We want to win our home games and what better time to do it than against Newcastle (tonight).”

Only five points separate West Ham in 13th and bottom club Huddersfield. And with Burnley and Newcastle so close together Taylor feels that puts even more emphasis on the Clarets’ need for maximum points in their televised meeting.

“It’s very tight. It’s still early on in the season, but you want to beat the teams around you more than anything and we want to put as many points between us and the bottom three as possible,” the left back told the club’s official website.

And he feels they can take confidence from the shut-out at Leicester in their last game, which ended a run of three defeats on the spin, with 13 goals conceded.

“I think that was the most important thing overall,” he added.

“We would have gone there wanting three points but getting a clean sheet was brilliant and something that will breed a lot of confidence into us.

“We were hard to break down and it was a bit more like we were last season.

“We were so together at the back and I think that showed. A lot of people said we were back to our old selves.”
