DAN Barlaser believes a direct approach can help Stanley recover their form ahead of Tuesday night’s visit of Wycombe Wanderers.

The Reds were beaten 1-0 at Rochdale on Saturday, a second straight defeat and a second game without scoring.

But John Coleman’s side remain in 10th in the League One table and Barlaser is keen not to let the Reds’ five game winless league streak derail their promising start to life in the third tier.

And the Newcastle loanee feels more crosses could be the answer to solving Stanley’s noughts.

“I think we need to get more crosses in. Billy (Kee) is a really good aerial threat, Ossie (Zanzala) as well, so I think if we put balls in the box more we have more chance of scoring.

“(At Rochdale) We had a couple of chances where we faffing around with the ball down the side instead of helping the ball into the box. I think we can be a bit more clever. We were just sloppy with where we were putting the ball. We need to look where the keeper is more with the chances we had.”

Barlaser knows full well how important three points could be against Wycombe in midweek as the Reds aim to keep pace with the top six.

“Tuesday is a massive game,” he added. “Hopefully we can get a good result. It is a chance to bounce back and do that quickly, that is what we want to do.

“The league is very tight and I think if we win in Tuesday we will be back up there.

We need to end the run and get a couple of wins under our belt.

“I think we start most games very well and we always work hard for each other but I think we need to score early.

“At home I think we are very, very hard to beat. Our home form is going to be important this season and I think we have played quite well away as well this season so we just need to put it all together.”

In the wake of the Dale defeat, Coleman called on his side to be ruthless and Barlaser admitted missed chances proved costly in the loss as Ian Henderson headed home the only goal of the game for the home side just after the hour.

“I think in the first half we dominated and we were the only team who was going to score in the first half and with the chances we created, on another day it could have been two or three,” said the 21-year-old.

“Obviously we haven’t scored and at half time the gaffer was saying that we need to be careful because if they get a lucky goal we could lose this game and that is what happened.

“It is sloppy marking from us and he has just nodded it in. We had chances in the second half but couldn’t score.

“I think there have been games where we have played worse than this and won games, a prime example would be Walsall where we weren’t really that good but we got a goal and hung onto it.

“I thought we passed the ball very well (against Rochdale) and created a lot of chances and we just couldn’t score. They have scored and they sat back on it and defended quite well.

“Defensively I don’t think Connor (Ripley) had to make any saves. We just need to work on our finishing.”
