JOHN Coleman wants his Stanley side to be more ruthless after the Reds drew a blank in a 1-0 defeat to Rochdale.

The loss means it is five League One games without a win for Accrington although they remain 10th in the League One table ahead of a home game with Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday night.

Ian Henderson’s header from Matt Done’s left wing corner was enough to earn Dale the points on Saturday but there was little to choose between the two sides.

Indeed, the visitors created the clearer chances with Billy Kee denied by a fine Josh Lillis save in the first half although the Stanley striker should have done better.

Having fallen behind the Reds struggled to respond in the face of an organised Dale defence but Coleman felt had his side had their shooting boots on then they could have made the short journey up the M66 with three points in the bag.

“We should have won the game, there is no doubting that. We have to score goals and if you don’t do that then you have to keep them out and we did neither,” he said.

“On the balance of the game we probably should have won and the least we deserved was a draw but you don’t always get what you deserve.

We had plenty of chances and didn’t take them, we did force the most pressure and made the next chances and unfortunately we didn’t work the keeper enough.

“Our keeper hasn’t made a save, their keeper has made two in the first half and I can’t remember him making a save in the second half.

“We have got to be more ruthless in front of goal and if you are not then you are always liable to fall for a sucker punch and we did.

“I think the most ardent Rochdale fan will be fortunate to win but that is the way it is.”

Coleman has often stated that his side should be scoring more goals given the volume of chances they create and while his side weren’t at their attacking best they still spurned a number of opportunities, particularly in the first half.

And the Reds chief was also disappointed with the goal his team conceded, with Henderson finding space to head past Ripley on 63 minutes.

He added: “There was still 25 minutes to go to get one or two but we huffed and puffed and they saw it out well.

“The currency is goals and they have scored a good one with a good header. It is frustrating for us and Callum (Johnson) knows he should mark him tighter and we should deal with it better but we have to move on. We have a big game on Tuesday and we have to focus on that.”
