SEAN McConville has nothing but fond memories of his time at Rochdale, albeit it brief, in 2012.

But the midfielder will be gunning to get one over his old club tomorrow to get Accrington Stanley back on track, and back into the top six.

A run of four games without a league win has forced the Reds out of the top six in League One and down to 10th on goal difference, with five teams locked on 28 points.

But McConville feels they can take confidence from their performance against Barnsley last weekend, despite defeat, and reassurance that they are capable of pushing back into the play-off picture as they head to Spotland tomorrow.

“It’s disappointing to lose any game, but Barnsley were like a Championship side - they were the best team, for me, that we’ve played against - so if we can pit our wits against clubs like that it shows we feel at home in the division now,” said the 29-year-old.

“We performed really well against Barnsley, we just needed a little bit of luck maybe in front of goal to take the lead.

“I think they’ll go up if they play like that every week.”

But equally McConville is optimistic that repeat performances for Stanley will lead to better results, starting tomorrow.

“I think it’s certainly a game we’re targeting to get three points from,” said the Scouser, who made four appearances for Rochdale on loan from Stockport towards the end of the 2011/12 season.

“I was only there for a short spell on loan but I made some good friends there. “It’s a real good club, good set-up and good people there, but I’m an Accrington Stanley player now, I love being here. It’s a bit of a derby. I’m sure we’ll take a lot of travelling fans there as we usually do.

“Every game poses something different at this level and we’ll be going there to try to win.”

McConville added that Stanley boss John Coleman had his own incentives for success tomorrow, as he returns to the club he managed for a year from January 2012.

“A lot of water has gone under the bridge since then and he has proved to everyone that he’s a top, top manager,” added the midfielder.

“Things didn’t quite work out for him at Rochdale but he’ll be targeting that game to try to get three points.”
