BURNLEY’S Jeff Hendrick picked up the Man of the Match award as Republic of Ireland finished their UEFA Nations League campaign with a 0-0 draw in Denmark, writes Joshua Bunting.

Hendrick's Clarets teammates Kevin Long and Robbie Brady also started the game in Aarhus while Jimmy Dunne, on loan at Hearts from Turf Moor, was an unused sub, as was Blackburn Rovers defender Darragh Lenihan.

The Republic's relegation to League C in the new competition was already confirmed before Monday's game, in which their poor run of form extended to only one win in 11 games.

And they rarely threatened against the Danes who had already secured top spot in the group and promotion following a win over Wales last week.

Nicolai Jorgensen hit the post and Yussuf Poulsen missed a big chance for the home side in the stalemate.

Ireland will now wait for next month's Euro 2020 qualifying draw where they will be placed in pot three.

Boss Martin O'Neill said: ""Since the Welsh game (where Ireland lost 4-1), we have had to tighten up defensively - I think we've been able to do that and now we have to try to fix it at the other end.

"We were playing Denmark away from home, who are full of confidence at the moment, obviously, from their exploits at the World Cup and qualification in this little league.

"We were very, very strong defensively and we will try to be a little bit more creative going forward. But I thought we were strong and the chances that Denmark had probably came of our own doing."
