BURNLEY FC Women geared up for their local derby against Chorley in the Lancashire FA Challenge Cup quarter finals as they beat Crewe 4-0.

The home win means the Clarets stay top of the National League Northern Division One as they secured their seventh straight league win.

Burnley started the game brightly as they forced an awkward goalkeeping clearance in the first seconds, the follow up attack saw a Lynette Craig header saved well from the Crewe goalkeeper.

The visitors quickly settled in to the game and used the downward slope at The Arbories Memorial Sports Ground to their advantage as they surged towards the Clarets goal.

Player of the match Leah Embley had a good chance when she got the ball on the corner of the 18-yard box, she shot wide as the goalkeeper was closing in.

Moments later the ball was in the back of the Crewe goal, but the linesman spotted an offside and the scores stayed level.

Crewe played to their strengths as they fired long balls towards their pacey strikers, Jo Holt in the Clarets defence used her own speed to keep the visiting strikers at bay.

Just before half time the Clarets struck the crossbar through a Sarah Greenhalgh shot from distance. The referee blew the whistle for half time as the two teams went in level.

As the second half began the Clarets quickly took control and started to create numerous chances.

Greenhalgh was presented with a great chance to break the deadlock but her shot hit the bar once again as she rounded the keeper.

Burnley then took the lead through Greenhalgh as she evaded the offside trap to shoot past the advancing keeper.

With less than 15 minutes remaining, Embley crossed deep and the goalkeeper spilled the ball in to her own net to give Burnley a two goal lead.

Two minutes later Burnley added a third as the Crewe goalkeeper made another error which led to Charlotte Banner finishing from close range.

The final goal came from an injury time penalty as Greenhalgh stepped up to add her second of the tie.
