CHARLIE Taylor described Burnley’s goalless draw at Leicester City as “huge for confidence” - not just for the defence but the team as whole.

The Clarets had looked a far cry from the resilient side that earned seventh place in the Premier League and a return to European football for the first time in over half a century as they shipped 13 goals in three defeats.

Two of those games came against unbeaten Manchester City and Chelsea, but even so there were concerns about the vulnerability of Burnley’s defence. After all, the Clarets had gone to Stamford Bridge on the opening day of last season and stunned the then defending champions with an away win.

Burnley had been struggling to hit the heights of the previous campaign, having become the only team to lose to Fulham this season, with the Cottagers putting four past them in the capital in August amid the Clarets’ hectic Europa League schedule.

But after getting over their European excursions and getting back to basics, Taylor feels the game against the Foxes was an indication of Burnley turning a corner.

“Result wise it’s a good point. I think more importantly the clean sheet is massive for us and we can take a lot of confidence from that going into the international break,” said the left back, who admitted it was a difficult game to play in with Burnley the first opponents at the King Power Stadium following the death of Leicester chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha in a helicopter crash outside the ground, which killed four others last month.

“Obviously it was a difficult day for everyone, we had to deal with a lot of things, the atmosphere and the crowd. I think overall it was a good point for us really in what was a tough game.

“We created a few chances and put men forward and on another day we could have got three points. But we’ll take the point and we’re happy with it.”

Of the clean sheet - Burnley’s third of the Premier League season and first in three games - Taylor added: “I think it’s huge for confidence.

“It’s great for a defender, you take more pride in it probably than the strikers do. But for the team as a whole it’s brilliant.

“Everyone knows we’ve let in a few goals recently so to get that clean sheet is huge for confidence for the team all round.

“We played Manchester City and Chelsea and obviously we know they’re world class teams but I think we know it’s not been good enough, but on Saturday it was.”
