Rovers' hierarchy have discussed their plans for the January transfer window, with Tony Mowbray continuing to target ‘marginal gains’ at the club.

Chief executive Steve Waggott and Mowbray won’t now be flying out to India during the international break, but conversations have been held regarding the club’s plans ahead of the winter window.

Mowbray is looking for continued improvement at Rovers, having overseen a restructure in the recruitment department as well as improvement to the senior training centre at Brockhall.

The boss is also looking to extend the club’s scouting network and in addition will look to strengthen a squad which has proven to be competitive in the opening 17 games of the Championship season.

Mowbray has travelled out to meet the owners in each of the last two summer, but revealed he also has regular contact on the phone with them as he looks for improvement in all areas.

“There are one or two things that I am asking for and they are trying to help,” Mowbray explained.

“They have been very supportive of me personally and of what you need to continually improve which is what I talk to them about. It’s no good standing still.

“I don’t go to them and ask for millions and millions of pounds to spend but there are small marginal gains that you can do at every football club to improve.

“I do have contact with the owners on the phone.

“To be fair to them they ring me rather than me having to chase them up.”

Mowbray wants to continue the upward trajectory at Rovers after leading them to promotion last season.

They went in to the international ninth in the Championship after 17 games, just two points shy of the play-off spots.

While Mowbray has been keen to play down expectations of what can be achieved this season, he says the support he has received from the owners is appreciate.

Rovers will part with around £7m to land Ben Brereton from Nottingham Forest when the transfer window re-opens on January 1.

And Mowbray added: “I’m trying, without stamping my feet and saying ‘I want X millions of pounds’, to say ‘if we can do this then it can make a difference to this department’ and ‘if we can add something here then we can get that bit better’

“They are seeing and understanding that and supporting it.

“There are the little things that I’m asking for and I would have to say they have been fantastically supportive of me.

“There are costs attached to those and in an environment where potentially you do have to be careful of the pounds otherwise they can run away, they have been supportive and I hope that’s because they see a potential of us moving forward as a club.”
