Tony Mowbray revealed the club’s medical department are monitoring Charlie Mulgrew after the Rovers skipper missed the weekend win over QPR.
Mulgrew picked up a rib injury in the draw at West Brom which forced him off after 15 minutes.
The 32-year-old has undergone scans on his ribs, but Mowbray revealed it is the closeness to his liver that is keeping Mulgrew sidelined, despite the Scot being keen to feature.
The Rovers captain will be assessed again this week before a decision over his involvement this weekend is taken.
“Mulgrew is desperate to play but the medical department are keeping him out of the picture at the moment,” Mowbray said.
“He’s had a couple of scans really.
“There’s more concern about the closeness of his liver, rather than the ribs themselves.
“We didn’t want to take a chance on him getting another bang on them and it causing him serious problems.
“We will wait and see, he’ll have another scan and then the specialist will decide whether it’s fine or not.”
