Andrew Fisher has the temperament required to handle any possible first team involvement, according to Damien Johnson.

The goalkeeper wasn’t involved for the Under-23s in their win over Liverpool as he looks set to be in the first team matchday squad against QPR on Saturday.

A facial injury to David Raya could see him sidelined for the foreseeable future, with Jayson Leutwiler next in line to step in between the posts.

That could see 20-year-old Fisher, who started all three Checkatrade Trophy matches last season as well as featuring in two other matchday squads, become second choice.

“Fish is the third choice and he’s in the first-team squad on a regular basis in terms of training and he does their gym work,” Johnson said.

“You see him on matchdays, and while he’s not been on the bench he’s at most of the first-team home games. Slotting in to the matchday experience won’t be difficult for him, he’s a terrific kid who has fantastic potential.

“I’m sure he’ll be ready and has the temperament to deal with it if required.”

Rovers Under-23s recorded their first win of the season on Monday courtesy of goals from Jacob davenport and Jack evans.

Johsnon made six changes from the side which beat Blackpool in the Lancashire Senior Cup five days earlier, but again stuck to the 3-4-2-1 formation which has served them well for the past two seasons.

Asked if that made it easier to make changes, Johnson added:  “I think the lads know the system, even with that we had little variants tonight where midway through the second half, Danny (Butterworth) went further up the pitch, and Stefan (Mols) retreated a bit.

“You know they’re intelligent players, and that’s what we want.

“They’ve got to work out the problems the opposition are giving us, and they have to try and solve them.

“I think in the end we got that out of them.”
