Ryan Nyambe is pencilled in to feature for Rovers Under-23s in tonight’s game with Liverpool at Leyland (7pm).

Nyambe travelled to West Brom for Saturday’s 1-1 draw but didn’t feature in the matchday 18.

However, the 20-year-old has recovered from a hamstring injury which has seen him miss the last month of action after being forced off in the 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest at Ewood Park.

Rovers are currently short of options in defence, after Charlie Mulgrew (hip) and Jack Rodwell (back) were replaced at the weekend, with Darragh Lenihan having not shaken off a hip problem in time.

The return of full back Nyambe is a timely boost for Tony Mowbray who will assess his central defensive trio this week.

Paul Downing played for the Under-23s in their Lancashire Senior Cup win over Blackpool, and with a shortage of defenders at first-team level, could be given a further chance to impress as Damien Johnson’s side look to get their first league victory of the season.

Midfielder Jacob Davenport, yet to play for the first-team this season after joining from Manchester City, is also set to play having played the last two matches.

He played 45 minutes of the 2-1 defeat at Brighton on October 20 and then 75 minutes against Blackpool, and is set to be given 90 minutes tonight.

Joe Nuttall has travelled with the first-team to each of the last two matches, without making the final squad, and to keep his match sharpness, may be another to feature for Johnson’s side.

Goalkeeper Andrew Fisher could make a rare appearance in a first-team matchday squad on Saturday should David Raya not be available, so Mowbray is likely to keep an eye on him during the match against a Reds side who are ninth in the table with two wins from eight matches.
