David Raya was taken to hospital after suffering what Tony Mowbray described as a ‘severe facial injury’.

Raya was stretchered off in the closing stages following a collision with West Brom striker Jay Rodriguez.

Richie Smallwood went in goal for the closing seven minutes, plus added time, as Rovers earned a 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns.

On the Spaniard, Mowbray said: “First and foremost my thoughts are with David Raya who has a really severe facial injury.

“He is in hospital and will be tonight I’m pretty sure.

“I’ve been speaking to Jay Rodriguez who is a bit upset because it is such a bad injury.

“The boys felt like their stomachs were turning seeing the injury to David Raya.

“It looks quite horrific, and we wish him well and obviously the medical department will take care of that.

“Let’s see, I spoke to West Brom’s doctor who was a bit concerned about his airwaves and the breathing mechanism.

“But I’m sure he’s in good hands.”

Rovers were already without Darragh Lenihan through a hip injury before losing Charlie Mulgrew in the first 15 minutes.

Central defensive partner Jack Rodwell was taken off with a sore back as Rovers’ injury problems mount.

On his skipper, Mowbray said: “Mulgrew got a knee in the ribs so whether he’s cracked one or not, I’m not sure.

“It looks very sore. I’ve had cracked ribs before and it can become very difficult to breathe.”
