Tony Mowbray knows it can be difficult to remain consistent in a ‘topsy turvy’ league, but feels Rovers have demonstrated they can mix it with the best in the Championship.

Rovers suffered a third league defeat of the season at Swansea City on Tuesday, and travel to fourth-placed West Brom in ninth spot, with 21 points from 14 games.

The Baggies will be reeling from a 4-1 home defeat to Derby County on Wednesday as they missed the chance to go top, with Leeds United, beaten at Ewood Park last weekend, reaching the summit after a win over Ipswich Town.

Mowbray’s focus however, is in on his side maintaining their performance levels.

He said: “We want to try and stay consistent with our performance but we have found, in two games, that they can run away from you.

“What happened the other night, the game ran away from us the longer it went on, a bit like Bristol City, there were similarities between the two games.

“We need to keep going, knowing the standards we set, and there are fine margins.

“It’s football, we have to not get too down about it, prepare for the next challenge and keep going and see where it takes us.

“We believe that we can compete with all the teams in the league, we haven’t played them all yet, but we feel that we will be able to.

“That doesn’t mean we’re going to win every game, we will lose some games, but as long as we are competitive in every game and give teams a real go, as we did by beating Leeds United, who then won in midweek to go top of the league then will be okay.

“It’s topsy turvy. We will look forward to Saturday, try and get something at West Brom, and then look forward to two home games.”

Rovers let a one goal lead slip at the Liberty Stadium, shipping three second half goals to lose 3-1, something Mowbray said was difficult to predict at half time.

Bradley Dack went close to an equaliser, only to see his goalbound effort superbly saved, moments before Swansea scored their third.

Of the midweek matches, and the unpredictable nature of the league, the boss added: “Derby going to West Brom, who had scored 18 goals in their last five matches, and winning 4-1, that was difficult to see coming. But you shouldn’t be surprised.

“With Bradley’s shot, it could easily have been 2-2, yet at half time you couldn’t really see them scoring, or causing us too many problems.

“I looked at the stats on the way home and they had two shots on target and scored three goals.

“We should look forward to every game, challenge ourselves, not get too down on the defeats and not get carried away when we win a game.”
