FORMER Burnley hero Brian Pilkington was honoured by the Lancashire Football Association this week after a stand at the County Ground in Leyland was named after the 85-year-old.

Pilkington made 340 appearances for the Clarets between 1951-61, scoring more than 70 goals.

He was on target in the title-clinching game against Manchester City while he also played a key role in the club's run to the last eight of the European Cup in 1961.

Pilkington, members of his family and more than 50 guests - including former Clarets Jimmy Robson and Trevor Meredity - attended the unveiling on Tuesday when the Brian Pilkington stand was officially unveiled at a ground where the attacker saw out his career playing for the now defunct Leyland Motors.

Lancashire FA’s Head of Commercial & Operations, David Chell said: “It was a pleasure to look back on and celebrate the career of Mr Brian Pilkington, unveiling a newly built stand in his name in the process.

“We had the privilege of welcoming Brian, his family and friends, representatives of football clubs which Brian once played for and the sponsors of the stand, Goldseal Windows, all looking back on Brian’s magnificent footballing career.

“It was a special day for football throughout Lancashire, and as the County FA, we were especially proud to host the event and name the stand in Brian’s honour.”
