Wythenshawe Amateurs 0

Burnley FC Women 7

BURNLEY FC Women returned to winning ways after storming to 7-0 victory at Wythenshawe Amateurs in the Lancashire Women’s Challenge Cup.

After last week’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Huddersfield in the Women’s FA Cup, the Clarets ensured they were back to their best as they dominated for the full 90 minutes.

The pitch at Hollyhedge Community Stadium was fantastic as a light drizzle helped make passing slick and it was no surprise to see Burnley create some early chances.

Burnley created three good chances to opening 20 minutes but finally broke the deadlock at the midway point in the first half.

Leah Embley beat several defenders to find herself in the penalty area before laying the ball off to Kathryn Halligan to score with a first time shot.

Embley was causing the home defence all sorts of problems and when she was fouled in the area Charlotte Banner stepped up and calmly placed the resulting spot kick in to the bottom left corner of the goal and the Clarets went in to the break with a two-goal lead.

Wythenshawe’s hopes of a comeback were ruined inside five minutes of the second half as Embley got herself two quickfire goals.

A great through ball by Justine Wallace put her one-on-one with the goalkeeper, and Embley made no mistake.

Minutes later, she was in an almost identical situation and it was th same outcome to make it 4-0.

Midway through the second half, Embley completed her hat-trick. Skilful play from Lynette Craig down the left wing saw her low cross parried by the goalkeeper and Embley was on hand to finish from close range.

Burnley scored two more goals as Evie Priestley slotted home from a corner. Halligan then scored her second of the game as the goalkeeper spilled the ball from a cross and she tapped in to the unguarded goal.

The Clarets return to league action on Sunday when they travel to the North East to face Newcastle.

as they aim to maintain their high league standing.
