BURNLEY'S Joe Hart returned to Manchester City for the first time since leaving the club as he lined up for the Clarets in Saturday's Premier League 5-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

The goalkeeper made 348 appearances for City and won five major trophies, including two league titles.

We analyse his afternoon.

Reception

There was little doubt Hart, who City honoured by naming a training pitch after him this week, would be warmly welcomed back to the Etihad. His name was strongly applauded when the teams were read out and there was a standing ovation with chants of "England's number one" when he took his place in front of goal for the start of the game.

Saves

After Sergio Aguero and Bernardo Silva missed the target with early chances, it was not until the 16th minute Hart was tested and he responded brilliantly, producing a fine reaction stop to keep out an Aguero volley from close range. There were further fine saves from a David Silva header and Aguero and Riyad Mahrez strikes but ultimately he could not stem the flow.

Command of area

For a lot of the game Burnley's defence did a good job of protecting their goalkeeper and he was well positioned when City did find a way through. As the game wore on, however, City began to find more holes and Hart looked exposed for the final goal.

Footwork

It was for a lack of passing ability that Hart found himself surplus to requirements at City. This was not an opportunity for him to prove Pep Guardiola wrong, though, as Burnley had so little possession. Whenever Hart did clear, he often went long to ease pressure.

Overall impression

Hart will not be happy to be leaving on the end of a 5-0 scoreline but Burnley's shortcomings were not down to him. He can still hold his head high after making a number of fine saves.
