Huddersfield Town Ladies 1

Burnley FC Women 0

BURNLEY FC Women suffered heartbreak when a disputed penalty in added time saw them bow out of the FA Women’s National League Cup to Northern Premier Division high-flyers Huddersfield Town Ladies.

In a game where both teams had chances to win, the Clarets came within minutes of taking their higher league opposition to extra time, only to be undone in the dying moments.

The hosts put Burnley under pressure in the early stages but it was the Clarets who had the first real chance when winger Leah Embley had a shot saved at the near post.

This sparked the home team in to life and Burnley keeper, Lauren Bracewell, made two good saves from long distance efforts while Town also hit the crossbar.

Just before the break, Burnley created another chance but Sarah Greenhalgh fired over the bar from the edge of the area.

The second half started with the home team again piling on the pressure and Bracewell was forced into another good save from close range before Town were denied by the crossbar for a second time.

With 10 minutes remaining a quick Clarets counter attack saw Greenhalgh again miss the target.

With the match heading for extra time, disaster struck for the Clarets when a loose back pass was seized on by a Huddersfield forward who went down under the challenge of the onrushing Bracewell.

The referee awarded a penalty to the hosts despite strong protests from the Burnley players. The resulting spot kick was calmly slotted home by Katie Mallin to give Huddersfield the victory.

Meanwhile, the Burnley FC Women Reserve team were beaten 4-2 by Fylde Ladies Reserves. Hannah Scott scored both goals in a second half fight back.

On Sunday, Burnley FC Women play Wythenshawe Amateurs LFC in the second round of the Lancashire Challenge Trophy.
