Craig Conway admits a future in central midfield is one that appeals to him, and something he has discussed with Rovers boss Tony Mowbray.

The Scot has largely been a firm fixture on the Rovers flanks since joining in January 2014, clocking up 21 goals and 40 assists in his 180 outings.

But the 33-year-old, who signed a new one-year deal at Rovers in the summer, has started just one Championship match this season, playing 105 minutes in all.

He started all three of their EFL Cup games, including two in the middle of the park against Lincoln City and Bournemouth.

Conway found the net in the defeat against the Premier League side and impressed in the central area.

When asked if it could be a long-term option for him, Conway said: “Hopefully, I’ve enjoyed it.

“It’s something that I’ve never done but it’s something the manager has spoken about a little bit.

“We have a lot of lads who can play in the attacking areas so I think it suits me to go in there.

“You see the game from a different perspective and I’ve been learning about it.

“I’ve really enjoyed it and who knows? I’m happy to get the opportunities and will wait patiently until I get another because I have enjoyed it.”

Rovers’ options in the wide areas were boosted by the arrivals of Kasey Palmer, Joe Rothwell and Adam Armstrong over the summer.

But they have also strengthened in the middle of the park with the loan signing of Harrison Reed and free agent Jack Rodwell who arrived in August.

The 27-year-old had been expected to provide cover in central defence for Rovers, as he did on his debut against Nottingham Forest last month.

However, the former England international cruised through an hour in impressive fashion in central midfield in the win at Bolton last time out.

And asked about Rodwell, Conway said: “He’s trained with us for a few weeks now after signing to build up his fitness and then played for the Under-23s against Arsenal before being thrown in and I think he’s done really well.

“He’s composed, he’s played at the top level and think you can see that.”

Rovers sit 10th in the Championship table ahead of their return to action against Leeds United on Saturday (12noon) with four wins and two defeats from their opening 12 games.

Conway is satisfied with that start following promotion from League One in May, and believes Bradley Dack’s goals have been key to the encouraging start.

“Overall I think we’ve made a really good start,” he added.

“I think after promotion we’ve probably surprised a few teams and have good quality in the squad.

“We have the likes of Dacky who was banging them in last season and he’s continued that in the Championship which he’s never played in.

“He’s hit the ground running and hopefully he keeps that up.

“We are all looking back on the start as a positive one.”
