DWIGHT McNeil described his first call-up for an England age-group squad as a 'dream come true'.

The 18-year-old is enjoying a breakthrough season at Turf Moor and he has now capped off a remarkable few months with a place in Paul Simpson's England Under-20 squad as a 'training player'.

McNeil linked up with the Three Lions at St George's Park on Sunday night and will get his first taste of the squad this week and is on standby for the games against Italy at AFC Fylde's Mill Farm ground on Thursday and in the Czech Republic on Monday (October 15).

“It’s a dream come true. It’s the first time and I was a bit surprised when it happened but I’m really happy. It will be a good experience,” said McNeil.

“It’s been an unbelievable start to the season and this call-up has just topped it off really.”

McNeil made his Burnley debut in the final minute of last season, coming on against Bournemouth, but he made his first start at the end of the Europa League run, impressing in the 1-1 draw against Olympiakos in the play-off round second leg.

The teenager kept his place for Manchester United's visit to Turf Moor as he made his first Premier League start and he was back on the bench at the weekend for the clash with Huddersfield.

It's been a whirlwind start to the campaign for McNeil, who plans to make the most of his first international call.

“So much has happened in a short space of time,” he added.

“It’s just about taking it all in and taking it on, but it’s been a good experience so far.

“I’ve just been told this will be a chance to have a look around and get a feel for what it’s like to train with the lads and be part of the group.

“The staff here have told me to go and enjoy it and that I deserve it and show them what I can do.”
