LAURA Massaro's wait to reach a final goes after losing to world number one, Raneem El Welily, in the semi final of the San Francisco Open.

The Chorley star, who won the tournament in 2016, went down 11-8, 11-9, 11-8 in a match that lasted 28 minutes.

El Welily will play either Annie Au or Sarah Jayne Perry in the final that takes place in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Massaro will now turn her attentions to the US Open that take place in Philadelphia next weekend.

The 34-year-old had reached the semi-finals with a 9-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-7 victory over Nicol David in 49 minutes to avenge her second round defeat to the eight-time world champion at the China Open last month.

The Houghton-based star had earlier beaten the unseeded Donna Lobban in 35 minutes, coming through 6-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-4.
