Adam Armstrong admitted there was a stroke of luck about his equalising goal in the weekend draw with Nottingham Forest but the Rovers man was disappointed it didn’t come in a winning cause.

Armstrong scored for the second successive game, and first in the Championship, six minutes after coming off the bench in the 2-2 weekend draw.

The 21-year-old cancelled out Lewis Grabban’s opener before Bradley Dack handed Rovers the lead. But Grabban scored from the spot as referee Andy Madley awarded the visitors a second penalty of the game, Grabban having blazed over with his first half effort.

“I thought we deserved more,” Armstrong told the Lancashire Telegraph.

“We had the chances and should have killed them off, but looking back you have to take the point.

“We kept on battling and we thought we’d won it.

“They pushed on and ended up nicking the penalty to take a point.”

It was Armstrong’s seventh Championship outing of the season, a second from the bench, and he scored at Ewood Park for the first time since March during his previous loan spell from Newcastle United.

He followed up his penalty in the Carabao Cup tie at Bournemouth with another goal as his left foot effort crept over Costel Pantilimon and in to the corner via the far post.

And he said: “I didn’t mean it. It was one of them where I’ve just tried to put it into a dangerous area and it’s looped over the goalkeeper. I’ll take it.

“I hit it quite sweet and I saw it heading towards goal before it looped over the biggest ‘keeper in the league which was nice.”

Rovers sit 13th in the table but just one point outside the top six in what is a congested mid-table.

Fourth place Sheffield United are at Ewood Park on Wednesday in the penultimate game before the international break.

And after a draw with Forest, who have an identical record to Rovers, Armstrong added: “They are pushing to get promoted and if we can perform like that against a top side then why can’t we do the same?

“The changing room is dead tight. Everyone gets on and there are no bad eggs. The aim is to turn those draws into wins now.

“We’re mid-table and would have got in the top six with a win. We’ll settle down and take every game as it comes.

“All games come thick and fast. We’ll recover well, eat right and get ready for Wednesday night against Sheffield United.”

Armstrong was sent on for Paul Downing moments after Forest’s opener as Rovers chased their way back in to the game.

On the instructions from his manager, the forward added: “I was asked to get at them and use my pace. I felt I did well when I got on.

“I had another chance in the half when I wasn’t looking at the ball and just running but in the end the ball ran away from me and I just couldn’t get there to take it round the goalkeeper.”

Dack followed up Armstrong’s equaliser with his seventh goal of the season in just his eighth appearance.

And at that point Armstrong felt they had done enough to earn the three points adding: “When you score two at home you do expect to win.

“We have to take the positives and one of them is taking on a team who have spend millions and probably been the better team on the day.”
