RIVALS Chorley and Clitheroe must battle it out again tomorrow night after Saturday's four-goal FA Cup first qualifying round tie at Victory Park.

Twice in front, Chorley frustrated their fans and manager Gerry Luczka by failing to hold onto their lead in this hard-fought match.

The Magpies looked the better side in the first-half, and had the chances to extend their advantage before the interval, but were then hustled out of their stride by a battling Clitheroe team which finished the stronger.

"I was pleased with our fluency and movement in the first period," said Luczka.

"But we lost our spark afterwards. We have a disturbing habit at the moment of not turning up for the second-half and that is something I've got to address urgently."

"There is no reason why we cannot go there in the right frame of mind and get a result."

Luczka expects another physical encounter in the replay at Shawbridge, with a 7.45pm kick-off, adding: "Our attackers got very little change out of their centre backs. They are a very competitive side and we must aim to match them."

In a bright opening, only a smart save by James Mann denied Chorley an early goal, the keeper diving to turn Lee Shillito's header from Phil Cooney's excellent cross onto a post but the home pressure paid off on 14 minutes, the goal albeit a fortunate one.

Clitheroe defender Kieron Fletcher attempted a back-header to his keeper but Mann had already left his line and the ball sailed into an empty net.

In a Clitheroe reprisal, Phil Priestley had to turn over a dangerous shot from Adam Koslowski before the visitors equalised after 24 minutes from a penalty.

James Mullineux's foul on Craig Sargeson was confirmed as just inside the box by a linesman and Joel Byrom stepped up to put away the spot-kick with the minimum of fuss.

Prior to the interval, the Magpies were close to scoring on several occasions but had to settle for regaining a narrow lead.

Both Joel Pilkington, with a cleverly measured attempt, and Michael Eckersley from a free-kick, narrowly missed finding the top corner before Jordan Goodeve restored Chorley's advantage with an excellent goal four minutes before the break.

Eckersley's searching cross was nodded back across the face of goal by Shillito for Goodeve to head in from point-blank range.

But Shillito then promptly missed a clear chance, miskicking when unmarked in the penalty area.

Clitheroe began the second-half in determined style and were quickly rewarded with an equaliser on 48 minutes.

Slack marking in the home defence allowed Peter Smith too much space on the right and he needed no second invitation to pick his spot with a crisp low shot from just inside the box.

The Magpies were dangerous in breakaways and Stuart Howson was unlucky to see his back-header skim the bar. Then Mann made a brave double save at the feet of David Moore and Cooney.

But it was Clitheroe who came closest to settling the tie in the closing minutes, Sargeson's shot following a corner being cleared off the line with keeper Priestley beaten.
