MEGAN Shackleton and Fliss Pickard both produced medal-winning performances at the PTT Czech Open in Ostrava.

Now the East Lancashire pair must wait to find out if they have been selected for the British Para Table Tennis Team for the World Para Championships in Slovenia next month. The team will be announced next week.

Todmorden teenager Shackleton, one of the young stars of the British Para Table Tennis Team, won gold in the women’s class four while Burnley’s Pickard won bronze in the singles and silver in the doubles.

Shackleton topped her group after 3-0 wins against Ekaterina Popova from Russia and Jelena Sisic from Croatia, and a hard-fought 3-2 win against the 17-year-old Italian Carlotta Ragazzini - the European Para Youth Games silver medallist.

A 3-0 win against Helke Koller from Austria in the semi-final took her into the final against World number 12, Aleksandra Vasileva, and she fought back from 2-1 down to beat the Russian 11-7 in the fifth.

“I’m so proud of myself for fighting back from being 2-1 down to win 3-2 after a tough battle to clinch the fourth 15-13,” said 19-year-old Shackleton.

“It’s always a challenge against Vasileva as we both have such similar styles, but I’m really glad I pulled through in the end as I wanted to win the gold in memory of my friend who recently passed away.”

Pickard, who represented England in the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, began with a 3-2 win against top seed Katarzyna Marszal from Poland - the former World champion and Paralympic team champion in Rio - and progressed from her group as runner-up despite a 3-2 loss to Emelie Endre from Sweden, the World number 12.

The 24-year-old had to settle for bronze after losing her semi-final to the experienced World number nine Gabriela Constantin from Romania 3-0.

Pickard then returned the following day to compete in the class six-seven doubles with Swedish partner, 15-year-old Caisa Stadler.

They began the round-robin event with a 2-0 win against Dora Molnar from Hungary and Keiko Fujimoto from Japan.

They were handed a walkover against Sweden but had to settle for silver after a 2-1 defeat to Fatma Fattakhova from Russia and Gabriela Constantin from Romania - although Pickard did well to avenge her defeat to Constantin in the singles, beating the Romanian in five sets.

“I think my performances in the singles and team were up and down,” said Pickard.

“But to get two wins against higher ranked players is always a confidence booster.”

She added: “I am happy with how I approached the team match against Gabriela having lost to her in the singles.”
