MUCH of Sean Dyche's Burnley team is built on partnerships, whether it be the two up front, Ben Mee and James Tarkowski at the back, or the central midfielders.

But one of the less heralded duo's in the Clarets side were reunited last weekend with great success. Matt Lowton was back in the team at right-back, with Johann Berg Gudmundsson in front of him on the right wing.

The dynamic between full-back and winger can be another key partnership and Lowton and Gudmundsson have built up a good rapport in the games they've played together.

The Icelander was named man of the match in the 4-0 win against Bournemouth, while Lowton's return to the side coincided with Burnley's first clean sheet since the opening day of the Premier League season.

"I’ve played a lot of games with Johann, he’s a great lad, he’s as honest as the day is long and I know he’s going to help me as much as I help him," the Clarets right-back said.

"We know each others games inside out, that comes from playing a lot of games together, working hard on the training ground.

"We spoke before the game about making sure we do our jobs and we did that, especially with him getting the man of the match."

Aaron Lennon and Gudmundsson spent the full 90 minutes against the Cherries on their opposing flanks, cutting in on their stronger foot, and it was Lennon arriving late at the back post to slide home Gudmundsson's cross that produced Burnley's second goal.

"That’s the good thing about having the wingers on the opposite sides," added Lowton.

"The overlapping run is designed to take the defender away to give him space on his left foot. It works both ways, if the defender stays with him he can slip me in.

"It worked well and we’ve got that understanding, with the quality he’s got on his left foot we need him crossing balls in."

Last weekend's win ended Burnley's poor start to the season, but just as importantly there were signs that the Burnley who stormed to seventh in the Premier League last season were back.

Now the Clarets will look to match those performance levels at Cardiff City on Sunday.

"We’re back to what we were all of last season. We spoke a few times in the week about getting back to that," Lowton said.

"Results are important, they’re hard to come by, but the main thing we look for is being hard to beat and running all over teams.

"The win can only breed confidence, we’ve got another winnable game this weekend, we’ll go there full of confidence and try and build that momentum we had last season.

"Momentum makes a massive difference. Winning games is good for everyone, it lifts the spirit of the group."

Sean Dyche has been searching for the winning formula in the early weeks of the season, and that included dropping Lowton for a couple of games, with Phil Bardsley coming in.

"It’s difficult, the manager pulled me to one side and said I wasn’t making the impact I had done last season," Lowton explained.

"It had been a couple of games, nobody likes not playing. Once you get back in the team you want to stay there, so hopefully we can go and a good run now, pick up some results and I can stay there all season."
