COLNE will show no fear as they look to cause an FA Cup shock at Broadhurst Park tomorrow, according to boss Steve Cunningham.

The Reds chief said the second qualifying round fixture with non-league giants FC United of Manchester was one of the biggest games of his time at the club.

And after a fine start to the season Cunningham’s young stars will travel in confident mood.

Colne are fifth in the Evo-Stik West and although the Red Rebels are two tiers highers in the National League North, they have won just one of their 10 league games so far.

“The whole football club is on a high, with the season we’ve had so far, winning seven of nine, so we go into this one full of confidence,” said, Cunningham who was appointed Reds boss in 2013.

“On and off the pitch there’s a real excitement due to the start we’ve had, and then the luck of pulling out a club like FC United of Manchester.

“We’re really looking forward to it, it’s one of the biggest weeks the club will have.

“It’s one of the biggest games we’ve had since I’ve been here. The biggest is probably when we won the league to get into the Evo-Stik, then the home game with Clitheroe two seasons ago to get us into the play-offs.

“You look at this, FC United away in the FA Cup, does it get much bigger than this? It’s the FA Cup, a club like us is never going to win it, but it’s a chance to put our name across social media and the non-league pyramid with a result.

“In that aspect it’s massive, one of the three biggest games in my time.”

Colne suffered their first defeat of the season last Saturday, losing 2-0 at Runcorn Linnets, but bounced back to beat Kendal in the Integro League Cup in midweek and Cunningham has been delighted with the performances of his team.

“Our form is superb for such a young team, the average age is 20, we’re going to a National League North side, they’re going to be looking at us and thinking this is a chance to kickstart their season,” he added.

“But we’re not going there fearing them. We’ve got lads who they would want in their team, it’s a banana skin for them, we’re expected to lose, but we’re going there with the belief that we can win and take advantage of their current situation but build on ours.”

Colne have already proved their cup credentials this season, beating higher level Hyde United in the last round, but Cunningham is aware Saturday is a different kind of test.

“Hyde are a massive club, a really big team in non-league, but on that day everything worked for us and we were the best team by far,” he said. “But Hyde was at home, on Saturday we’ve got young lads going to FC United with 2,000 people screaming at them in a big stadium.

“A lot of them haven’t experienced anything like that before, hopefully they won’t freeze. We’ll try and put them at ease but you never know what young players characters are like until it happens.”

National League North leaders Chorley are also in FA Cup action tomorrow, welcoming Leek Town to Victory Park.

Captain Andy Teague is hoping the Magpies can match their heroics from last season, when they reached the first round proper.

“The excitement that the competition brought to the town when we played Fleetwood was amazing,” he said.

“We will be the favourites but we have to go out there to try to get the win on Saturday and get through.”
