STANLEY star Sean McConville believes the club is capable of mounting a promotion push - if they can start turning draws into wins.

The Reds drew 1-1 at Fleetwood last weekend - their fourth successive match with that scoreline - and have drawn five of their opening eight games following promotion to League One.

But John Coleman’s side are unbeaten since the opening day of the season and sit 10th ahead of a home game with AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

And McConville is confident that Stanley can iron out parts of their game and become the ‘surprise package’ of the third tier.

“The belief has grown,” said the 29-year-old, who was on the scoresheet at Highbury, of adjusting to life in the third tier.

“Stepping up you don’t know what to expect, everyone doesn’t know what to expect, it’s a massive step but we have taken to it really well, but we have got to start turning draws into wins.

“There is nothing to be afraid of.

“If you look at that Fleetwood team, they went to Sunderland and deserved to win and Sunderland are one of the best teams in this league supposedly. They have gone and dominated Sunderland, we have then dominated them.

“If that’s the yardstick to go by we will be fine this season, not only fine but as a squad, as staff, the world is our oyster.

“We can do something in this league, we believe that.

“We aren’t settling for just staying up, we want to be a surprise package like we were last year, and really do something.”

And McConville, who has three goals to his name already this term, believes the Stanley fans can see the potential in the side.

The Reds were roared on by more than 600 travelling supporters at Fleetwood and produced what McConville labelled as their best display of the season so far.

Even though that didn’t yield three points, the wideman believes the signs are pointing in the right direction.

He added: “That’s the best we have played this season, no disrespect to Fleetwood but if we come off winning that game 6-2 or 6-1 there would be no arguments.

“With the amount of chances we have created first and second half, we should be winning that game.

“We have just got to keep going, their keeper has got man of the match and deservedly so, he has made some great saves, we have just got to keep battling away and creating chances and eventually they will go in.

“We are playing great football, it’s enjoyable to play in and I am sure for the fans it’s enjoyable to watch but we have to turn these draws into wins.”

And McConville is confident that Stanley’s luck will eventually change.

“It is frustrating, you only have to sit in the changing rooms after the game,” he added.

“It’s frustrating when you are creating chances and they are not going in.

“It’s not something we don’t work on in the week but it’s something you can’t emulate in game situations, it’s different to training.

“You can finish all you like in training but put yourself in a game situation, it is different.

“Once we start taking the chances I know for a fact there is a team who will be on the end of a hiding from us.”
