After Derby County boss Frank Lampard accepted an FA charge for improper conduct, Tony Mowbray put it down ‘to the emotion of the game’.

Lampard was charged following his 77th minute sending-off during his side’s defeat at Rotherham on Saturday.

The 40-year-old left his technical area to complain about a decision and was dismissed by referee Peter Bankes who had earlier sent off Tom Lawrence for a foul.

Mowbray, who passed 600 games as a manager last month, knows full well of the frustrations surrounding the job but has largely kept them in check, having been sent to the stands just twice in his career.

Lampard will be in the dug-out tomorrow night, despite the charge, and Mowbray said: “I think it’s enthusiasm.

“You want to be successful in your first job and I think it’s important to be and he has a good vehicle to be successful with.

“I think Derby County, and the owner they have got, they have invested some money over the years and they have an aspiration, I would suggest, to get out of the Championship this year.

“He is a young manager with a huge pedigree, he wants to win games.

“At times there will be frustration, as there is with all of us.

“We all have game-plans of how we want to play and work all week to implement it and if the players don’t do certain things you get frustrated.

“(Pep) Guardiola had them (Manchester City) in on Sunday after winning 3-0 on Saturday because he wasn’t happy. It’s either in you or it’s not.

“Frank will learn about his personality as he goes on. He seems a pretty calm and thoughtful guy and football can do that to you.

“I have seen some clips of myself doing daft things in the past and it’s like an out of body experience and you think ‘who’s that idiot? Did I really do that?’ It’s the emotion of the game and where it takes you.”

Derby suffered their third defeat of the season at the New York Stadium, sitting on 12 points from seven games going in to tomorrow’s game.

“I’ll accept the fine and we’ll move on,” Lampard said at his pre-match press conference.

“Some of the frustration comes because we didn’t play as well as we could on the day.

“Sometimes, mistakes can be made. The best referees make less mistakes. The level is good in the Championship.”
