JACK Cork is convinced Burnley have the players to drag themselves out of their early season predicament - having bounced back from a similar sticky spell last season.

The Clarets are winless in five at the start of this campaign and find themselves bottom of the Premier League after Sunday's 1-0 defeat at Wolves.

But Cork believes the Clarets can call on recent experience - a winless run of 11 games that stretched from mid-December to the start of March last season - to turn their form on its head.

One win certainly proved a catalyst at the end of that long stretch without a win, with victory over Everton starting a run of five successive Premier League victories.

Asked if Burnley could draw on the experience of that run now, Cork said: "Yes, definitely. We came out of that patch and won five games on the bounce and that's what we need to do now.

"We came out of that period strong and pushed on until the end of the season. The momentum helped us last season and pushed us higher in the table than we thought we would be.

"Even if we'd have carried on losing we would have still finished the season in the top half of the table. We know that we've got the players to get out of this."

Burnley's slow start to the season has coincided with their European exertions, with six Europa League qualifying fixtures on six successive Thursday nights.

But the Clarets have looked a shadow of the side who enjoyed so much success on their way to seventh place last season.

"We know what we’re good at, we know what we did well last season," Cork said. "When we get that win it will follow and we’ll get some confidence.

"The start to the season is always difficult, teams are up for it, we’ve had Europe. We know we can stay and compete throughout the season though.

"We have to stick in there and not let our heads drop.

"When the win comes I’m sure we’ll be able to follow it up. I’ve been at clubs before where we’ve had bad starts and we’ve stayed up comfortably. I believe this squad can do that."

While the defeat at Molineux, coupled with West Ham's win at Everton, has seen Burnley fall to the foot of the table, Cork insists it's far too early to take too much notice of the standings.

And he points to the turnaround enjoyed by Bournemouth and Crystal Palace last season for comfort that the Clarets can bounce back.

"You see it and you look at it but there's no point in taking any notice of it now. We're only five games in," the 29-year-old said.

"Bournemouth lost their first four games last season and Palace lost their first seven, without scoring a goal, so there's still plenty to be positive about. It's a bad start but hopefully we can change that in the next game."
