Charlie Mulgrew earned cap number 38 as he played 90 minutes in Scotland’s UEFA Nations League win over Albania.

The Rovers skipper was part of a back three as Alex McLeish’s men bounced back from a 4-0 friendly defeat to Belgium with victory over Albania courtesy of a brace from Steven Naismith.

Mulgrew lost the captaincy to Liverpool full-back Andrew Robertson but remains a key figure in the Tartan Army’s plans.

The 32-year-old will now return to East Lancashire to prepare for Rovers’ Championship fixture against Aston Villa on Saturday.

Scotland are next in action when they host Portugal in a friendly on October 14 before the reverse fixture against Albania in the Nations League on October 17.

Meanwhile, Ben Brereton earned his first cap at England Under-20 level but endured a debut to forget.

Having been an unused substitute for last Thursday’s win over Switzerland, the teenager was thrust in from the start by Paul Simpson for their match in Holland.

Eddie Nketiah put the Young Lions in front after just seven minutes but they eventually slipped to a 3-1 defeat in Katwijk.

There was further disappointment for Brereton, substituted just before the hour, as he saw a first half penalty saved with the score at 1-0.

Next month, the Under-20s face Italy at AFC Flyde (October 11) before travelling to Czech Republic four days later.
