HUMBLE Burnley manager Steve Cotterill declared his side's Carling Cup first round win "Grimsby's night".

The Clarets won 4-2 on penalties after coming back from a goal down in extra time against the League Two outfit.

Andy Gray made it two goals in two games to force the game to be decided from the spot, after substitute Danny North had put Alan Buckley's side in front in the 111th minute.

James O'Connor scored the winning penalty, after Ciaran Toner blazed over and Brian Jensen saved from Nick Fenton.

"For me it was Grimsby's night," Cotterill said.

"I thought they played some great football and made it very difficult for us.

"We're pleased to be in the next round. When the game's nip and tuck and on a blustery night it's tailor-made for a cup upset.

"We were on a hiding to nothing. We don't really get any credit for winning but we would have got, I suppose, a little bit of stick if we'd got beat.

"I thought Grimsby were excellent, they've been good hosts and we'd like to wish them all the best for the rest of the season, but we're obviously pleased ourselves we're through."

He added: "They played that team on Saturday and we've made nine changes - it may have been 10, but I wanted to get the shape of the team right.

"I think in the second half it livened up. I thought we could have won it. Twenty minutes into the second half we should have won it, wrapped the game up, and in the last 20 mintues they could and should have won it.

"So, all in all, over extra time I thought it was probably a fair result.

"The only surprise with our penalties was that we actually missed one because I know what we've got there.

"We had to bear that in mind with our substitutions as well, which ended up being very important to us in the end."

Cotterill also praised the Clarets' 300-plus strong following.

"We had some great support as well. That mustn't go without a mention," he said.

"They were fantastic and got the atmosphere going in the second half and I think that helped us."
