BURNLEY haven't prepared for penalties should their Carling Cup tie with Grimsby Town go the distance.

But manager Steve Cotterill does not fear that will impede them if the situation arises, with the number of takers he now has at his disposal.

Andy Gray set his stall out with a confidently struck spot-kick to kick-off the new season with a 2-1 win at home to West Brom on Saturday.

Other equally capable candidates hot on his heels to take over are Robbie Blake, Jon Harley and Kyle Lafferty, to name a few.

Now Cotterill has thrown a new name into the mix following the capture of David Unsworth (pictured).

The former Everton and Wigan Athletic defender has been prolific from the spot throughout his career. In fact, he is currently the Toffees' all-time record penalty scorer, heading a pile that includes England and Spurs legend Gary Lineker.

"It certainly is an option," said Cotterill, when asked if Unsworth would be in the frame for taking any penalty awards.

"If we go to a penalty shoot-out at the moment, wherever it is, if we don't win a penalty shoot-out I couldn't see us winning any game.

"We've got some excellent penalty takers now.

"Gray, Blake, Unsworth, Harley, Jensen takes a great penalty. We'll have a few other claimers. Lafferty takes a great penalty."

Without the option of a replay, the Carling Cup clash at Blundell Park will be settled tonight.

But Cotterill admitted that penalty practice was not on the agenda in yesterday's training session.

"We changed quite a few things and I think other things were more important than getting to the penalty shoot-out bit, so we didn't do that," the Burnley boss said.

"We'll be definitely changing the team. I had it in my head to change the team, and I looked at the boys (yesterday) morning, there was a lot of energy used on Saturday.

"It's quite demanding this league and somewhere along the line they need to get their energy levels back, and I think if I play them again tonight, all I'm doing is draining them again and they may not get them (back).

"We count ourselves very lucky that we have got an opportunity of changing quite a few tonight."
