MARK Haydock underlined his dominance of British powerlifting after adding two more titles to his collection and another world record.

The Hoghton strongman won the 145kg squat and deadlift classes in the British Drug Free Association Single Lift Championships at Bradford University to take his total to nine in the competition.

The 32-yearar-old, who trains in Feniscowles, set a new world record of 312.5kg in the deadlift and beat his own British record in the squat with a lift of 292.5kg.

He won the best lifter in both categories on the Saturday but missed out on his third clean sweep' after finishing in fourth place in the bench press on Sunday with a lift of 172.5kg - his least favourite of the three disciplines.

But despite his success, Haydock admitted he was not entirely happy with his weekend's work.

"I've won two more titles, set British and World records so I should be really pleased," said the double world champion and multiple and current British Powerlifting champion - which combines all three lifts.

"But, as odd as it sounds, I am not really happy,"

"My ideal championship would have further increased the world record and to have got a top three finish in the bench press. That is my Achilles heel event and to have won that one would have been a miraculous!"

Haydock, who is also a strongman champion, said a back injury damaged his hopes of getting an even bigger world record.

"I suffered a bit of a back strain after Saturday's events and it hampered my attempts to further increase the world record in the deadlift on Sunday.

"But you can be your own worse enemy in these situations so I should be happy really."

But it also proved to be a good day for Haydock's club-mates with Ben France winning the bench press 100kg class with a lift of 252.kg, a new North West record.

Andy Varley was third in the 145kg class with a lift of 175kg and was runner-up to Haydock in the squat with a lift of 240kg. He also enjoyed a podium finish' in the deadlift with a lift of 272.5kg to finish third.

Next up for Haydock and his team-mates is to compete in a BDFA Strongman event in Cornwall at the end of August.

He is hoping to stage a strongman contest in the East Lancashire area and is looking for suitable venues and is also appealing to anyone who would like to sponsor the event.
