THE Match of the Day pundits were split on whether Michael Keane should have been sent off in the Clarets goalless draw with Middlesbrough.

The Burnley defender felled former Turf loanee Patrick Bamford when the Boro striker through on goal in part slip, part foul but referee Martin Atkinson opted to give a yellow card to Keane and Sean Dyche's side were able to negotiate the final nine minutes of the match.

The fixture was the last game shown on Match of the Day on Saturday night and former Spurs and England midfielder Jermaine Jenas felt Keane should have been dismissed.

He said: "For me it is a red card, it is a huge talking point. Keane said himself he got away from one and I definitely agree with him.

"You can say he slipped but I don't care, Bamford is in on goal. His touch isn't bad, it hasn't got away from him, he has his eye on the ball and he is on goal so it is a red card."

But ex Manchester United and Everton man Phil Neville admitted he could see why Atkinson had opted to keep Keane on the pitch.

"I actually don't think it is a red card," said Neville.

"I sympathise with Martin Atkinson. That touch from Bamford takes him out to the right. Tom Heaton is coming out as well and I just wonder if Martin Atkinson thought that because the touch isn't great and took him to the side, and Heaton is coming out as well, that he was going to give the benefit of the doubt to Michael Keane - who obviously slipped.

"I can see why he doesn't want to send him off, I think it is in that 50-50 area."
