BURNLEY’S five-game winning record at the KC Stadium came to an end in this Boxing Day bout, as they suffered third third defeat in five Championship fixtures - and their heaviest loss of the season.
The Clarets, fifth going into the game, were looking to close the gap on fourth placed Hull. But Burnley never got going in a goalless first half.
Hull had the bulk of the chances, with Tom Heaton saving well from Mo Diame and, from a Sam Clucas corner, Harry Maguire’s header.
Burnley had a couple of shots before the break, but neither Joey Barton or George Boyd could do enough to test goalkeeper Allan McGregor.
The Clarets have not won after going behind this season, so the worst was feared when Clucas got the better of Matt Lowton and delivered a cross that Jake Livermore fired first time across Heaton and into the bottom left corner in the 57th minute.
Abel Hernandez doubled the Tigers’ lead less than 10 minutes later, picking the ball up on the right and driving into the box to beat an unsighted Heaton.
Burnley boss Sean Dyche made three changes quickly, bringing on Michael Kightly and Rouwen Hennings for Scott Arfield and Andre Gray; and later Matt Taylor for George Boyd.
Taylor and Hennings combined to fashion chances, but striker Hennings could do no better than to find the side netting, while Taylor dragged a shot wide of the near post.
Hull wrapped the game up in the first minute of stoppage time, with Clucas firing into the roof of the net from close range from David Meyler’s cut back.
