WORSLEY Cup holders Nelson will live to fight again another day as they beat Church in a low-scoring affair in the first round yesterday.

The holders struggled at Seedhill, with only captain Mike Bradley making any impact as he hit 34 in his side's total of 102.

And the visitors looked to be on course to stop the holders' defence at the first hurdle as they were 58-3. But Nelson hit back and 3-12 from Martin Heap and 2-10 from Danny Kegg saw Church collapse to 93.

Colne professional Greg Mail delivered with the ball as his side made it into round two with a comprehensive win over Rawtenstall.

Mail took a superb 6-17 from 10 overs, including that of his opposite number Sanjay Bangar, to reduce Rawtenstall to 97 all out.

He also took a hat-trick in an inspired spell, removing Vinny Hanson, Will Cook-Martin and Andy Riley in consecutive balls.

And although Mail failed with the bat, Colne coasted home thanks to Matt Wilson blasting a half-century.

Last season's Worsley Cup runners-up, Burnley, are into round two thanks to a superb spell of bowling from James Capstick. He took 6-26 as Rishton slumped to 111 - Saeed Anwar Jnr making 48 in his side's total.

Vishal Tripathi made an unbeaten 44 as Burnley coasted home.

Todmorden also enter the second round draw after a rare win at Thorneyholme Road.

Accrington were bowled out for just 147 despite 58 from Graeme Sneddon and 48 from pro Nishit Shetty. Todmorden pro Francois du Plessis and Andrew Sutcliffe both took three wickets each.

Du Plessis then hit 47 and Mo Bux 40 as the visitors made it over the finishing line.

The double act of Shanan Stewart and Phil Bolton helped East Lancs overcome Enfield. Stewart (73) and Bolton (57) were the mainstays of East Lancs' 205-7. Adam Bracewell hit 51 in reply but it was all in vain.

In the other tie, Bacup beat Haslingden by four wickets. Graham Knowles hit 50 for Haslingden in their 152-9 but a solid batting display saw Bacup home. Ramsbottom and Lowerhouse both had byes.
