EVERY Burnley fan wanted a piece of goalscorer Ian Britton ... quite literally.

Supporters swarmed around their hero, who had scored the decisive goal to secure the Clarets' Football League survival, stripping him of his shirt, shorts and socks as he battled his way through the crowds towards the tunnel.

"I finally got back into the dressing room with just a jockstrap and one boot," said Britton, who put Burnley 2-0 up with a header early in the second half against Orient.

Neil Grewcock had scored the opener just before half-time after latching onto Britton's delivery on the right, cutting inside and driving a low left-foot shot home from 20 yards.

Roles were reversed three minutes into the second half as Grewcock turned provider for his team-mate.

"We won a free-kick on the right, Neil took it and put it right on my head. Absolutely perfect!" Britton said.

"Neil's goal had eased the tension a little bit, but Orient made chances and looked dangerous throughout the game.

"Brian Miller and Arthur Bellamy had just told us to go out there and do our best.

"The crowd slowly started coming over the fences as full-time approached to surround the pitch. But only when the final whistle blew did we know we were safe.

"Afterwards we sat in the dressing room for maybe 45 minutes celebrating, then went upstairs and celebrated some more!"

The diminutive Scot added: "It's a day I'll remember for the rest of my life and I still get people mentioning it to me when I'm out and about.

"People have called me their hero and thanked me for keeping Burnley in the Football League. That's very special.

"I always get a nice feeling that the fans are so grateful and that they still remember.

"It's such a great club and it would have been a tragedy if they had gone out of the league."
