Durham's England trio upstaged their Lancashire counterparts to win the Friends Provident Trophy match at Chester-le-Street by 57 runs.

Paul Collingwood made 74, Liam Plunkett hammered 33 runs and removed Mal Loye and Brad Hodge, while Steve Harmison defied tonsillitis to bowl superbly.

After chipping in with 14 not out to get Durham's total up to 220 for nine, Harmison regularly topped 90mph and he was rarely off line in taking two for 31 in 10 overs.

He also took the catch at deep mid-wicket which brought the downfall of his great friend Andrew Flintoff, who surrendered to the off-spin of Gareth Breese after making only 11.

Flintoff went in with Lancashire slight favourites on 76 for two in the 19th over, but with Stuart Law ruled out by a calf injury they were all out for 163 in the 46th over.

Lancashire pipped Durham to the northern group title last season, but have now lost three out of four this year while Durham have won two out of three.

After Durham chose to bat, a good opening spell from James Anderson reduced them to 23 for two as he found the edge of both left-handed openers, Michael Di Venuto and Phil Mustard.

But Flintoff conceded 19 runs in his first three-over spell and Sajid Mahmood went for 22 in four as Collingwood set about them in partnership with 23-year-old Scot Kyle Coetzer.

The total looked light when Loye got off the mark with a slog/sweep for six off Neil Killeen and hit two more in his first 25 runs before going on to make 43.

He then slapped Plunkett to Collingwood at backward point, and in an excellent fielding display Collingwood also swooped from mid-wicket to run out Luke Sutton.
