COLNE went top of the North West Counties League Premier Division with a convincing win over AFC Liverpool at the XLCR Stadium.

It didn’t take the Reds long to take the lead against the visiting side from Merseyside.

The match was then 13 minutes old when Spencer Jordan turned home Simon Nangle’s low cross into the bottom corner of the visitors net.

AFC Liverpool played their part in a keenly fought first half but it was their keeper Joshua O’Connell who caught the eye with some outstanding saves.

After 21 minutes, he pushed a header from Jay Hart over the bar with an acrobatic leap and on the half hour he made a point blank save at Hart’s feet when a goal looked certain.

Colne’s goalkeeper Chris Thompson was called into action early in the second half, taking a series of high crosses into the area while Bobby Evans’ shot was blocked by the Reds defence.

After weathering the storm Colne began to take control and Jordan forced a good save from O’Connell before the lead was doubled on the hour mark.

Danny Boyle was slipped into the area and rounded O’Connell to slot home the Reds second goal.

The two-goal advantage lasted just eight minutes though, with Colne pegged back when Steve Jones fired a 20-yard shot into the top corner of the net to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

The Reds pressed forward looking to restore their advantage and after 75 minutes Boyle’s run and cross gave Jordan the opening to sweep home their third goal from 10 yards out.

Two minutes later, Colne went further ahead when Ben Hoskin provided the through ball for Boyle to score with an angled shot inside the far post and round off the scoring at 4-1.

The victory means Colne remain unbeaten in the NWCFL this season, winning six and drawing two of their eight games.

They are a point clear of Barnoldswick Town at the top, but have two games in hand on their local rivals, and their haul of 27 goals from those eight games also means they are the league’s top scorers.

Boyle’s double took him to 11 goals for the season, while Jordan’s two strikes mean he now has seven goals for this campaign.

Steve Cunningham’s side are in action tomorrow when they travel to Squires Gate (7.45pm).
