TOM Heaton admitted Burnley “came up short” in their midweek defeat to Ipswich, but has vowed to put it right.

The Clarets have not gone ahead in any of their four league and cup games so far this season.

Against Leeds and Birmingham they recovered from one-goal deficits to draw their opening two Championship games.

But on Tuesday, having missed a couple of first half chances at Portman Road, they were undone by two goals in five second half minutes, and found no way back.

And Heaton said it was important to make sure they were all on top of their game for Saturday’s visit of Brentford as they bid to recover from a winless start to the season.

“There are fine margins and we came out the wrong side of them, which is very frustrating,” he said.

“I think everyone needs to be looking at themselves and make sure we’re ready to go on Saturday.

“We need to get it right.

“Everyone needs to look at themselves and make sure we’re doing everything we can for Saturday.

“We came up short (at Ipswich).

“I think we showed some good stuff in the first half and had a couple of good chances, and we’ve restricted them to not a lot throughout the whole game really. But obviously they’ve scored the two goals and that’s not good enough.

“When the first one goes in you’ve got to keep it shut again and unfortunately we didn’t and it’s very frustrating.

“We need to make sure we’re keeping the door shut and at the minute we’re not doing so.

“It’s something we need to put right.”

Burnley have yet to keep a clean sheet this season, but have also failed to score in two of their opening four fixtures.

A 1-0 defeat at Port Vale knocked the Clarets out of the Capital One Cup at the first hurdle, then a week later Ipswich scored twice without reply.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche has looked for strength in numbers up front, with three forwards signing in the summer to replace Danny Ings, following his move to Liverpool, while Ashley Barnes’ season has been all but written off by a cruciate knee ligament injury.

Jelle Vossen, Chris Long and newest signing Rouwen Hennings are all competing for a place in Dyche’s front two, along with existing strikers Sam Vokes, Lukas Jutkiewicz and Marvin Sordell and the right formulahas yet to be found.

“The eyes go straight onto Brentford at home,” said Heaton.

“It’s another big game and we’ll certainly look to put the performance in and hopefully the result will follow.

“The first win is the first milestone we look for. It hasn’t happened in the first three (league) games so that’s the next big thing.

“We want it to come straight away and Saturday’s the next opportunity.”
