LANCASHIRE swimming sensation Tom Hamer says it’s full speed ahead for Rio after turning in an impressive performance at this year’s National Paralympic Day.

The 16-year-old took S14 200m silver at last year’s Commonwealth Games and also has a European silver and most recently a world bronze medal to his name.

He showed his potential once again at the London Aquatics Centre on Sunday as he produced a strong swim to finish top of the pile in the 200m freestyle.

And Hamer says he is determined to produce the goods when the heat is on in Brazil next summer.

“I’m really happy with the swim, I would have liked to have gone a bit faster at worlds but I’d rather do it at Rio now,” he said.

“It’s been a tiring week but you always have to pick yourself up and move on to the next competition and make sure you are ready.

“I’m really excited for Rio, Brazil is an amazing country and it’s going to mean the world if I can go there and compete for Great Britain.

“It would mean so much to make that team and I hope that when it comes down to it I can produce some good performances and do the country and team proud.”

National Paralympic Day is an annual event designed to help continue the legacy of the 2012 Games with elite athletics also taking part at the Olympic Stadium.

And Hamer says the chance to compete in the pool where he watched some of his swimming heroes compete three years ago was a dream come true.

“In the last 50m of the race I could hear everyone shouting and it’s a great feeling to be honest and that pushes you on and helps you win races,” he added.

“It means the world to me to be able to come here and swim to be honest because this is where the Paralympics were and it’s a great experience to swim here.

“There are so many people here watching and supporting you and they might not know who you are but they understand that it’s Great Britain and really support you.

“They put a lot of effort in to helping to make you the best that you can be and that’s really amazing. National Paralympic Day is a great experience for the younger generation and can help to inspire them.”
