Nelson were undone by three goals in the first half at Newcastle.
Nick Wellecomme forced in a rebound from close range to give Town the lead in the eighth minute.
And he doubled Town's lead when Karl Miller's header crashed off the cross-bar and Wellecomme was there to again profit.
Town went further ahead on 39 minutes when Dorryl Proffit nodded home.
Nelson eventually got some reward for their ambition on 61 minutes when Eddie Stanford's free-kick was parried by the keeper and Martin Payne drove the loose ball into the roof of the net to make it 3-1.
A 40-yard shot by Payne after 74 minutes was finger-tipped over the bar by the back-pedalling Town keeper and Nelson had strong appeals for a penalty waved aside when Luke Hargreaves looked to be pushed to the ground.
But the Blues defence allowed Lee Talbot plenty of room to score Newcastle's fourth a minute from time.
