INTERNATIONAL rally driver Neil Simpson has become an honorary life member of the newest motorsport club in the UK and says he is “delighted” about the accolade.

Neil, 42, who is managing director of Simpsons Skoda, with showrooms in Preston and Colne, was thrilled when approached by Preston Motorsport Club, which became MSA-recognised in March.

The club has hit the ground running, with more than 30 members, many new to motorsport, and with an average member age of 25.

Within the club there are already several up-and-coming youngsters, including Chorley-based stage rally driver Jack Darbyshire, who turned heads with a brilliant fifth-placed finish on the 2015 North West Stages, only a year after starting his rallying career.

Neil, who is awaiting delivery of his new R5 Skoda Fabia rally car, says: “Preston Motorsport Club is obviously a go-ahead type of organisation that is being run by a young group of motorsport enthusiasts.

“It is a unique new club and is a breath of fresh air.

“Their approach to me about honorary life membership means an awful lot. I feel flattered and am excited about the club’s future.

“I am sure that the club will go from strength to strength in a city that has grown significantly.

“And as I now live in the Greater Preston area it is a good fit for me and I hope that I can help to encourage and inspire the younger members to become more involved in this sport.”

Preston Motorsport Club chairman Kris Coombes said: “Our members are elated to hear about Neil accepting our honorary life membership award.

“He will undoubtedly prove to be a wonderful ambassador for our club wherever he goes rallying – and we look forward to inviting Neil and his team to our meetings and annual dinner. What a marvellous piece of news.”

In 2015 Neil plans to tackle several events both at home and overseas. Rallies targeted include Ypres, Barum, Rally Yorkshire, Valais and Condroz.
