COLNE cyclist Steven Burke has missed out on selection for the Great Britain squad for next week’s European Track Championships in Guadeloupe.

Burke sits out the event alongside Sir Bradley Wiggins in what is otherwise a near full strength squad for the men’s endurance side of the team.

The 26-year-old, nicknamed the Colne Cyclone, took a silver medal in the individual pursuit at the British Track Championships at the end of September, his last competitive event.

He was a member of the British team pursuit quartet that took gold in the European Track Championships in Apeldoorn last year, but he won’t be able to personally defend the title.

Matt Christian, Ed Clancy, Jon Dibben, Owain Doull and Andy Tennant are the five named in the squad for the endurance events.

Shane Sutton, British Cycling technical director, said: “This European Championships marks the first opportunity for us to score Olympic qualification points for Rio and, as such, the squad as a whole is prepared and looking forward to this season’s racing.

“It’s good to see some new faces in the team, with Ciara Horne, who joined the Academy programme last month, making selection, as well as Mark Christian, who returns to the track team as a guest rider following his strong performance at the Commonwealth Games.”

The European Track Championships take place from October 16-19 in Guadeloupe, which is in the Caribbean but still belongs to France.
