EDDIE Monaghan, who served as Lancashire Union of Golf Clubs president in 2001-02, has died at the age of 80 following a year-long battle with illness.

He was born in Ballinamore in County Leitrim, one of five children whose father was a police sergeant, and was educated at St Mel’s College, Longford, and Uni College in Dublin.

Eddie moved to England after completing his studies and worked as an accountant at Firestone Tyres in London before changing career and becoming a maths teacher at Thornleigh Salesian College, Bolton, in 1958 where he aspired to head of the department.

During his years at Thornleigh he was nicknamed “Rinty” Monaghan after the world champion Irish boxer. Eddie taught film director Danny Boyle and was editor of the Bolton Catholic News and Thornleigh College magazine.
