A FRIDAY night fixture delivered a respectable attendance but not Accrington Stanley’s first league win as former Burnley forward Zavon Hines put Dagenham and Redbridge on the way to victory last night.

The Reds brought this game forward a day in the hope of boosting flagging crowds in recent times.

‘Fan Friday’, a ticket offer aimed at attracting fans from other clubs as well as their own supporters, drew a crowd of 1,751 – more than watched Stanley play Premier League Cardiff in the League Cup six weeks ago.

Among the crowd were David Lloyd and former Reds management duo John Coleman and Jimmy Bell.

But unfortunately they did not witness any change in fortunes for a Stanley side who have now drawn two and lost eight of their 10 league fixtures this term.

Already starting to be cut adrift at the bottom of League Two, sadly the Reds look like a side in real trouble right now.

Hines scored the first for Dagenham, before providing the assist for the second as the game got away from Stanley at the start of the second half.

The visitors had the first chance of the match when a pass from Rhys Murphy played in Hines, whose effort was saved by Marcus Bettinelli.

But Stanley came within a whisker of taking the lead when Lee Naylor swung in a corner from the right and Peter Murphy’s header struck the near post.

Shay McCartan hooked a volley over before Kayode Odejayi could not quite capitalise on error from visiting keeper Chris Lewington.

Odejayi dispossessed the keeper outside his area, but could not keep the ball within his reach and the opportunity came to nothing.

Stanley looked certain to go ahead in a match for the first time since their third game of the season, at home to Portsmouth on August 10, when Tom Aldred headed the ball across goal from a corner at the start of the second half.

McCartan met it at the far post, but somehow directed his header wide from close range.

Stanley were made to pay as minutes later Murphy released the pacy Hines, who fired past Bettinelli to put Dagenham in front.

Hines returned the compliment just after hour mark – providing the pass for Murphy to finish.

It was all too easy.

James Caton, signed on loan from Blackpool on Thursday, came off the bench for his debut.

But boss James Beattie, who had named himself as a substitute for the first time since becoming Stanley manager, opted not to bring himself on.

Beattie has stressed that he would rather see his young protégés do the business than have to play himself.

Substitute James Gray did pull a goal back in injury time, converting a rebound after Will Hatfield’s initial effort had been parried.

But it was too little too late, and the Reds’ winless run goes on.
