GARY Bowyer is holding talks to discover if he can use the money from the sale of Mauro Formica to strengthen his Blackburn Rovers squad before the end of the transfer window.

Rovers slipped to 22nd in the Championship table over the weekend after Friday’s defeat at Doncaster left them with only one point from their opening three games of the league season.

Bowyer is eager to sign a striker and had already been attempting to make a loan addition in that area, as short-term cover for the injured DJ Campbell and Ruben Rochina.

That search has taken longer than the Rovers boss would have liked but he remains determined to add a couple of players to his squad before the transfer window shuts on September 2.

And Bowyer now hopes his transfer kitty could be boosted after Formica was sold to Cruz Azul hours before the Doncaster game.

The fee has been reported to be in the region of £600,000, although Rovers are not revealing the price because of a confidentiality agreement with the Mexican club.

“I’ll have to have a chat with the board and find out what funds are available,” Bowyer said.

“If they make it available then we’ll certainly look to use that.

“We’re working hard to improve the squad and bring one or two more bodies in, and that’s what we’ll continue to do.

“I feel we need to add a little bit more in our attacking, so we’re looking at attack-minded players and making improvements there.”

Venky’s remain willing to bankroll Rovers but the club are having to be prudent with one eye on the incoming financial fair play regulations in the Football League.

Rovers are also still attempting to move on other high wage earners and may have to agree pay-offs with some if exits are to be finalised before the window shuts.

They had been in talks over a settlement for the final year of Gael Givet’s contract, before the Frenchman’s move to Italian club Livorno collapsed last month.

Givet was an unused substitute at Doncaster, when Bowyer insisted his side deserved more from the game.

The manager felt Theo Robinson was offside when he put the hosts in front, but knows Rovers must start picking up points quickly.

Rovers’ next two games are both at home - against Barnsley on Saturday before Bolton visit Ewood Park a week later.

“It’s a disappointing start in terms of points tally,” Bowyer said.

“But in terms of how we’ve performed in certainly two out of the three games, then for a new team gelling they’ve showed signs of that quite quickly.

“But we can’t keep going on about it, we have to get points on the board and start winning matches quickly.

“Everybody is desperate to win and unfortunately we’ve not been able to do that.

“The players are professional people and they’re disappointed.”
